INTRODUCCIÓN.
Los áfidos o pulgones constituyen un grupo muy extenso de insectos. Pertenecen al orden Hemiptera, suborden Homoptera (cicadelas, pulgones, moscas blancas y cochinillas) y forman la superfamilia Aphidoidea. Están distribuidos principalmente por las zonas templadas, habiéndose detectado unas 3.500 especies, de las cuales 500 son plagas de los cultivos. De todas ellas hay algunas que sólo afectan a un solo cultivo (monófagas), y otras que lo hacen a gran número de ellos (polífagas).
Generalmente son insectos de cuerpo blando pequeño, aspecto globoso y con un tamaño medio entre 1-10 mm. Hay pulgones ápteros (sin alas) y alados. Los primeros tienen el tórax y abdomen unidos, y los segundos perfectamente separados.El color puede variar del blanco al negro, pasando por amarillo, verde y pardo.
Los pulgones son insectos chupadores, y están provistos de un largo pico articulado que clavan en el vegetal, y por él absorben los jugos de la planta. Segregan un líquido azucarado y pegajoso por el ano denominado melaza, e impregna la superficie de la planta impidiendo el normal desarrollo de ésta.
En la zona final del abdomen, se encuentran situados dos tubitos o sifones, de distinto tamaño y forma según especie, por el cual segregan sustancias céreas.Otras especies, poseen en el abdomen glándulas productoras de cera pulverulenta con la que se recubren, son los pulgones harinosos o lanígeros.
CICLOS DE VIDA DE LOS PULGONES.
Los áfidos presentan un ciclo de vida complicado debido a las diversas fases por las que pasan y a las formas que adoptan, tan diferentes entre sí que en algunos pulgones inducen a considerarlos como especies distintas.
Según la planta hospedante, pueden distinguirse distintos tipos de pulgones:

En función de ello la variedad de ciclos vitales de las especies de pulgones o áfidos es muy compleja, a continuación se describen con más detalle.
Ciclo Específico. Ciclo Holocíclico y Monoecia.
Las plagas específicas viven sobre un mismo vegetal y sobre él se produce una generación alternante de reproducción sexuada y asexuada, respectivamente. Para describir el ciclo comenzaremos por la reproducción sexuada, que se produce siempre en otoño. Los pulgones sexuados aparecen desde septiembre a noviembre, los machos, en general, van provistos de alas y las hembras son ápteras (sin alas) casi siempre; también se dan casos, como en la filoxera, en que sean ápteros los dos sexos; los órganos bucales son muy pequeños y atrofiados, por lo que no se alimentan en toda su vida.
La hembra de esta generación sexuada deposita un solo huevo, denominado huevo de invierno. Este huevo permanece sin evolucionar hasta la primavera; entonces da origen a una hembra, denominada hembra fundadora, de la que se deriva toda la generación de pulgones.
La hembra fundadora es siempre áptera y se reproduce por partenogénesis. Frecuentemente es vivípara, pero en algunos casos también puede ser ovípara. De ella se derivan otras muchas hembras ápteras que solo se diferencian de la hembra fundadora en que son algo más pequeñas y de menor fecundidad.
De las primeras hembras ápteras se derivan, por partenogénesis, otras iguales y todas juntas constituyen la plaga de insectos que invade las plantas; el número de generaciones anuales puede ser grandísimo, de aquí su rápida propagación. De estas hembras ápteras aparecen otras hembras aladas, también partenogénicas, capaces de invadir otros cultivos de la misma especie vegetal; de estas hembras aladas, en los nuevos cultivos invadidos, se derivan otras ápteras idénticas a las primitivas. A esta forma de aladas se las denomina virginóparas.
Al llegar el otoño se producen otras aladas denominadas sexúparas; éstas por partenogénesis depositan huevos, ya machos o hembras, y de éstos nacen los individuos sexuados que depositan el huevo de invierno en la misma planta, cerrando el ciclo biológico.
Existen, por tanto, dos formas aladas: una, las virginóparas, que transmiten la plaga a lugares lejanos, y otra, las sexúparas, que aparecen sólo en otoño y dan lugar a la generación sexuada, de las que deriva el huevo de invierno.
Ciclo Emigrante. Ciclo Holocíclico y Heterocia.
Se complica el ciclo de las plagas polífagas; el huevo de invierno se deposita sobre una determinada especie vegetal denominada huésped primario, y sobre esta misma habitan la hembra fundadora y las distintas generaciones de hembras ápteras partenogénicas.
La diferencia con el ciclo anterior comienza en las hembras aladas virginóparas, llamadas en este caso emigrantes, por trasladarse a otras especies vegetales diferentes de la anterior, denominadas huéspedes secundarios, donde dan lugar a otras hembras ápteras, partenogénicas, diferentes de las que se desarrollan sobre le huésped primario; a estas hembras se las denomina exiliadas, y dan lugar a otra plaga aparentemente distinta de la primera; generalmente al llegar el otoño aparecen entre las hembras ápteras exiliadas otras aladas sexúparas que regresan al huésped primario en el llamado vuelo de retorno, dando lugar a la generación sexuada de la que procede el huevo de invierno.
La emigración puede ser absoluta o facultativa. En el primer caso toda la colonia del huésped primario le abandona y se traslada al secundario, mientras en la emigración facultativa sólo una parte acude al huésped secundario, continuando el resto sobre el primario como en las especies no emigrantes. Aún puede ocurrir que las generaciones exiliadas continúen reproduciéndose indefinidamente sobre el huésped secundario por vía agámica, sin retorno al huésped primario.
HUÉSPEDES VEGETALES.
Son insectos muy polífagos, destacándose por interés económico los siguientes cultivos o grupos de ellos: melocotonero, tabaco, remolacha, frutales, hortalizas y ornamentales.
DAÑOS CAUSADOS POR LOS ÁFIDOS O PULGONES.
Los áfidos o pulgones pueden ocasionar distintos tipos de daños al cultivo, que pueden ser:
A) Directos. Se deben a la alimentación sobre el floema de la planta (existen muy pocas especies que se alimentan del xilema). Las ninfas y los adultos extraen nutrientes de la planta y alteran el balance de las hormonas del crecimiento. Esto origina un debilitamiento de la planta, deteniéndose el crecimiento, las hojas se arrollan y si el ataque es muy severo puede secar la planta. La detención del desarrollo o la pérdida de hojas se traduce en una reducción de la producción final.
B) Indirectos. Como consecuencia de la alimentación pueden generarse los siguientes daños indirectos:
ESPECIES DE ÁFIDOS MÁS IMPORTANTES.
Los áfidos más importantes que se dan en cultivos de invernadero son:
Myzus Persicae
También conocido como el pulgón verde del melocotonero y la patata, tiene un tamaño de 1,2 a 2,3 mm y es de color verde amarillento, con sifones verdes, largos y dilatados. Se caracteriza por la forma en W de los tubérculos frontales. Suelen aparecer hembras aisladas con muy pocos descendientes que tienden a dispersarse.
Es un insecto muy polífago que produce importantes daños directos e indirectos sobre los cultivos, destacando tomate, pepino, patata, tabaco y muchos otros cultivos vegetales.Myzus persicae quizás sea el pulgón más importante ya que tiene un rango muy amplio de especies hospederas secundarias incluyendo algunos cultivos.
Es una especie cosmopolita en climas templados apareciendo en América del Norte y Europa. Es capaz de transmitir más de 100 virosis, aunque rara vez aparece en grandes cantidades para causar daño directo debido a su actividad alimenticia.
Durante su ciclo se producen cambios de hospedadores, debido a que necesitan para completar su ciclo dos hospedadores (dioico). Tienen al melocotonero y algunas especies del género Prunus como hospedadores primarios, y a un gran número de plantas herbáceas como hospedadores secundarios.
El invierno lo pasa en estado de huevo, realizándose las puestas en las yemas del melocotonero. A partir de febrero se produce la eclosión de los huevos, apareciendo las hembras fundadoras.
En los brotes del melocotonero pasan entre dos y tres generaciones. En la última de estas generaciones todos los insectos son alados, y emigran a otros cultivos, no quedando pulgones en el hospedador primario en el mes de junio.
Durante los meses de verano pasan varias generaciones en los hospedadores secundarios, y en el mes de septiembre realizan el vuelo de retorno hembras y machos alados, realizándose las puestas en brotes tiernos y axilas de yemas.
En hortalizas se presentan especialmente en solanáceas, en invernadero hacen todo el ciclo sobre estas y alternando con plantas adventicias.
Aphis Gossypii.
Aphis gossypii es actualmente la especie más habitual en el algodón y en otros cultivos de la misma familia (Malvaceae), y dentro de las Cucurbitaceae, pepino y especies próximas. También es conocido como el pulgón del algodón y el pulgón del melón.
Son individuos de pequeño tamaño, 0,9 – 1,8 mm. Su coloración es muy variable, entre el amarillo, verde oscuro e incluso negro mate, dándose una amplia gama a menudo presente en la misma colonia, no presentando esclerificación dorsal. Los cornículos son de color oscuro, siendo la cauda algo más clara que éstos. Tienen las antenas relativamente cortas y los ojos rojos.
Aphis Fabae.
También conocido como el pulgón negro de la judía, es un insecto muy polífago, y ocasiona importantes daños directo e indirectos en gran número de cultivos, destacando judía, espinaca y remolacha.
Los adultos son de color negro mate o verde oliva, mide 1,5 a 3 mm y tiene las antenas cortas. Los inmaduros son verdes al principio para ir oscureciendo.
Son dioicos, teniendo como hospedadores primarios especies de los géneros Evonymus, Viburnum y Philadelphus, pudiendo estar las colonias sobre el hospedador 1º durante todo el año.
Procedente del huevo de invierno, aparecen una o dos generaciones fundadoras en el hospedador 1º. La emigración de los insectos alados se producen con unas condiciones óptimas de 26º C. y 60 % de humedad relativa. En otoño vuelven al hospedador 1º, apareciendo los adultos sexuados y poniendo el huevo de invierno.
MÉTODOS DE CONTROL.
Métodos preventivos y técnicas culturales.
Se aconseja:
CONTROL BIOLÓGICO.
Entre los enemigos naturales de pulgones existen varias especies. El control biológico de pulgones ejercido por parasitoides es realizado por especies del género Aphidius. En general dentro de los depredadores de pulgones, destacan larvas y adultos de neurópteros (Chrysoperla carnae y Chrysopa formosa), Coleópteros coccinélidos (Coccinella septempuntata), larvas de Dípteros y varios Himennópteros. Dentro de los entomopatógenos destaca el hongo patógeno Verticillium lecanii.
En M. persicae, y en invernadero, se ha conseguido control biológico con los parasitoides: Aphidius matricariae, Ephedrus cerasícola; como depredadores: Aphidoletes aphidimyza; y como hongos : Verticilium lecanii.
En A. fabae, hay un parasitoide que les ataca, que es el Lysiphebus testaceipes, y algunos depredadores sírfidos, cecidómidos y coccinélidos.
Control Químico.
Myzus persicae, es una de las especies que más ha desarrollado resistencias a los plaguicidas, aconsejándose su utilización a partir de los meses invernales. El umbral de tratamiento se estima en un 3-10 % de brotes atacados.
